COUNTY DOWN SURNAMES EXPLORED

Date: 20 January 2003

Downpatrick Library is host to the first of four talks in Down Libraries’ successful Local History at Lunchtime series. On Wednesday 22 January at 1pm the library, in association with Gael Linn, welcomes Aodán Mac Pόilín, director of the Ultach Trust, whose talk is titled Surnames of County Down.

So if you’re a Fitzsimons (or Fitzsimmons), Smyth, Kearney or O’Hare you‘ll be able to piece together your past. Or if your surname is McCartan, Curran, Gilmore or Hamill you’ll be able to analyse your ancestry. Maybe you’re a Flanagan, Flynn, McMullan or McCormack – if so, your roots will be revealed.

The derivation of many other common Down surnames will be uncovered in Aodán’s talk. What’s in a name? Find out in Downpatrick Library on Wednesday 22nd.

Everyone is welcome at the talk, which is free. Refreshments will be provided.
