Happy Christmas email at Downpatrick Library

Date: 28 November 2002

If you’re despairing about ever getting that Christmas card off to your furthest and dearest in Australia, Japan or America Downpatrick Library may be able to come to your rescue. Between Monday 9th and Friday 13th December, library staff will be introducing people to the wonders of e-mail and e-cards. The sessions, which can accommodate up to 10 people, will last for an hour from 10.30 to 11.30 each morning.

Branch Library Manager Valerie McMullan explains the thinking behind the scheme:

Downpatrick Library is well equipped with computers and our aim is to familiarise as many people as possible with the new technology. E-mail sounds complicated to the novice, but it’s really easy once it’s demystified. We’d especially encourage anyone who has relatives and friends abroad to come and use e-mail to send a Christmas e-card. We will show how to set up an e-mail account and send and receive messages. All you need to do is bring along the e-mail address of the recipient.

Sean Beattie, Information Team Librarian, is keen for everyone to exploit the technology:

We have 20 internet-ready computers in Downpatrick, all offering free access to the internet and e-mail. We want everyone to have a go whatever their knowledge level. In fact we are particularly interested in anyone who hasn’t yet tried surfing the Net or sending messages by e-mail. Next week’s beginner’s sessions will take people through the basics of e-mail – the last time we ran similar sessions, we were surprised and pleased at the number of first-time computer users who came forward – many of whom have since become regular users. Remember use of the computers is free to members. If you’re not already a member, then membership is free too.

Everyone is welcome at the sessions but as interest is likely to be high you are advised to book in advance at the library.
