BERNARD DAVEY EXHIBITION AT NEWCASTLE LIBRARY

Date: 13 June 2002

From Monday 24 June Newcastle Library is the venue for an exhibition of photographs of the Mourne area by local personality Bernard Davey. The compositions formed the basis of Bernard’s project Mourne, sustainable change for the next 100 years The project, which explored the changes that have taken place in the Mourne area over the last century, took the form of a photographic study of Mourne for which Bernard acquired 50 old photographs and retook the same pictures approximately 100 years later.

The photographs reflect the former TV weatherman’s love of Mourne, an attachment which stretches back to the 1950s when the young Bernard’s parents bought a cottage in King Street, thus ensuring that all holidays, and nearly all weekends, were spent under the shadow of Slieve Donard.

After retiring early from the Meteorological Office and, with it, his post as BBC weather presenter, Bernard settled back into the area and soon embarked on his first publishing project Bernard Davey’s Mourne: 10 Walks with the Weatherman. This beautifully produced and fast-selling work was followed two years later by a second book of walks Bernard Davey’s Mourne Part 2.

As further evidence of his commitment to the area Bernard became a trustee with the Mourne Heritage Trust. He is also a voluntary director with Mourne Activity Breaks, an organisation promoting the region as a holiday destination.

Everyone is welcome to the exhibition which continues until Saturday 20 July.
