BEYOND WORDS-LIBRARIES CELEBRATE ARTS & CULTURE

Date: 17 April 2002

Following the success of South Eastern Education and Library Board Library Service’s first Beyond Words festival in May 2001 which attracted over 1500 visitors to a host of events and exhibitions in SEELB libraries, Beyond Words 2002 takes off on Tuesday May 21 and runs until Saturday 25th.

Like last year, every library including mobiles will be involved and there will be something to interest all age groups. Among the events on offer are:

 Selima Hill, Whitbread Poetry Prize winner 2002 (Bangor Library, 21st, 8pm)

 Two Downpatrick writers, David Park and Damian Smyth (Downpatrick Library, 21st, 8pm)

 Shadrum drumming playshop (Newtownbreda Library, 22nd, 7.30pm)

 Cú Chulainn sagas, performed by Frances Quinn (Dairy Farm Library, 22nd, 7pm)

 poetry workshop with Joan Newman (Bangor Library, 23rd, 2pm)

 classical guitar recital with Classical Guitar Society of Northern Ireland (Tullycarnet Library, 23rd, 8.15pm)

 In Vino: an evening with Saintfield reading Group exploring (and tasting) the connections between wine and literature (Saintfield Library, 23rd, 8pm)

 Anne Doughty: an evening with the author (Dunmurry Library, 23rd, 7.30pm)

Younger audiences will be entertained by author of The Bottle-top King Jonathan Kebbe; author/illustrator Mary Murphy; Switchers author Kate Thompson and storyteller Fran O’Boyle

Continuing the inaugural festival’s innovative approach the five mobile libraries, which serve the area’s rural and suburban clients, will all offer a cultural experience to their regulars. Fran O’Boyle will be on board the mobile at its Culcavy, on 23rd at 3.50pm, to entertain patrons with his tales of the Glens of Antrim, while Indian dancing is on the itinerary of the Bangor mobile when it calls at Newtownard’s Phoenix Clinic on 23rd at 11.30am
