TECHNOLOGY
AND DESIGN
Technology and Design in the Northern Ireland Curriculum provides pupils with
opportunities to engage in practical, design-based activities resulting in tangible
outcomes of a technological nature developed to meet identified needs and opportunities.
Technology and Design has an important contribution to make to pupils' general
education and development as part of their preparation for living and working
in a modern technological society.
The general aim of Technology and Design in the Northern Ireland Curriculum is
'to enable all pupils to become confident and responsible in solving real life
problems, striving for creative solutions, independent learning, product excellence
and social consciousness.' (Technology and Design Ministerial Working Group,
1991)
The SEELB's Technology Unit has the responsibility of providing curriculum advice
and support in Technology and Design, and associated subject areas and disciplines,
to schools within the Board's area.
The Technology Unit's support team, comprising curriculum, technical and administrative
personnel, operates out of specialist accommodation located at Board Headquarters,
Dundonald.
