SPECIAL
EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
THE
CASS SEN TEAM, IN PLANNED DEVELOPMENT OF SUPPORT OVER A THREE YEAR PERIOD
HAS:
- undertaken awareness raising on the Code of Practice for governors,
principals, SENCOs, teachers and Board officers;
- developed support structures for SENCOs in primary, secondary and
grammar schools, teachers in special units and teachers in outreach
services;
- offered centre-based INSET on aspects of special educational provision
for all SENCOs;
- worked closely with priority schools to develop whole school policy
and practice in SEN, raise whole staff expertise and improve teaching
& learning;
- initiated links with other CASS teams (literacy, numeracy, behaviour
support, ICT) to seek consistency of message in schools.
THE CASS SEN TEAM SUPPORTS:
- senior managers, teachers, classroom assistants in nursery, primary,
secondary, grammar and special schools;
- teachers and classroom assistants in primary and secondary special
units;
- beginning teachers and teachers new to special education
- officers in Special Section (pupil support and advice);
- educational psychologists (pupil support and advice).
THE CASS SEN TEAM LIASES WITH:
- CASS Literacy Team
- CASS Numeracy Team
- CASS Behaviour Support Team
- CASS ICT Team
- Special Education Section (joint training initiatives, procedures
and record keeping)
- Educational Psychology Service (joint training initiatives, procedures
and record keeping).
CASS SEN TEAM CURRENT OBJECTIVES:
- To help schools develop and implement structures and strategies
for identifying and responding to pupils with special educational
needs.
- To promote co-operation and consistency in the delivery of the curriculum
in special schools, special units, and through Outreach Services.
- To facilitate the development of SENCOs as effective managers of
SEN in mainstream schools.
- To provide SENCOs with the opportunity to gain a validated Diploma
in Professional Development.
- To provide advice on access to the curriculum for individual children
with statements of special educational needs.
