MATHEMATICS

The Mathematics team of the SEELB supports and advises schools in their efforts to improve the teaching, learning, leadership and management of mathematics and Numeracy. Currently the team consists of 3 primary and 2 post-primary officers.
The mathematics unit provides advice, guidance and support for schools who:

  • Have Numeracy as a priority in their School Development Plan
  • Require post inspection follow-up
  • Are involved in the Raising Achievement in Numeracy (RAIN) project

During the academic year the unit provide a variety of innovative and motivating courses for:

  • Beginning Teachers
  • Primary Mathematics Co-ordinators
  • Clusters of primary schools developing a specific aspect of Numeracy
  • SENCOs and teachers teaching mathematics to pupils with learning difficulties
  • Recently appointed Heads of Department / Numeracy Co-ordinators
  • The implementation of the Revised Curriculum

The mathematics unit also provides general support to all schools ranging from the development of units and schemes of work for new courses to the delivery of the annual Mathematics Co-ordinators Course for primary schools where a wide range of resources are created and distributed to schools on CD.
Materials and resources to assist all teachers, and in particular those just beginning their teaching career are continually being developed along with a variety of challenges and competitions at both primary and post-primary levels designed to raise the profile of mathematics inside and outside the classroom.
The Mathematics Team regularly contributes to the work of all Education and Library Boards in the planning and dissemination of the Northern Ireland Numeracy Strategy.
