LEARNING THROUGH WORK

In response to the challenges that curriculum review will bring CASS established a range of pilot projects to measure the effectiveness of work related learning for students following courses at Key Stage 4 and post-16.

The pilot projects created working partnerships between schools and employers. Schools identified areas of the curriculum where learning could be greatly enhanced by students spending time in the workplace. Employers were able to contribute directly to teaching and learning in a practical way and actively stimulate students thinking about the skills they need to develop in order to prepare for the world of work.

Practical placements for the following subject areas were created —
  • ‘A’ Level Technology Design
  • ‘A’ Level Home Economics
  • AVCE Information and Communication Technology
  • AVCE Business Studies
  • AVCE Construction and the Built Environment
  • AVCE Travel & Tourism
  • AVCE Leisure & Recreation
  • AVCE Health & Social Care
  • GCSE Business Communications
  • GCSE Leisure & Tourism

The findings of the pilot project indicated that this approach was applicable to a broad range of subject areas. A generic toolkit has been devised for curriculum planners and teachers thinking about this method of delivery.
