ART AND DESIGN

The Programme of Study for art and design has one attainment target which embodies the key experiences of investigating and realising. Experiences in art and design should enable pupils to develop increasing aesthetic sensitivity and competence in :
  • the creative, imaginative and selective use of a wide range of art and design tools materials and processes including drawing, painting and graphic tools and processes, printmaking processes, textile processes, ceramic processes, sculptural and three dimensional processes and lens based media;
  • recording observations and gathering information as a stimulus for imaginative and creative work;
  • using and combining the visual elements, the language of art (colour, tone, line, shape and space, form, texture, pattern);
  • talking about, describing and making informed and critical comments about their own and other people's work;
  • critically appreciating the work of local, national and international artists, designers and craftworkers.
ARTISTS IN SCHOOL/PROJECTS
An artist / designer / craftworker, composer, dancer, writer working in school with pupils can be a very enriching experience.

Pupils can:
  • gain a deeper insight into the role of the artist /designer /craftworker, composer, etc
  • view/experience high quality and publicly recognised work at first hand
  • develop their own understanding and skills
  • learn the value of sharing and thus extending one's own ideas .

Recent Artists-in-Schools projects in the SEELB include 'artfelt', a felt making project in four post primary schools and Patricks Gift, a claymation project in a rural primary school.

Claymation
CLAYMATION
Drumaghlis Primary School pupils worked with an animator from the Nerve Centre in Derry on an animated film on the life of St Patrick. This involved literacy, art and design, music, ICT, history and cultural heritage.
Artfelt
ARTFELT
Artfelt was a textile project based in De la Salle High School, Downpatrick, Comber High School, St Colmcille's High School, Crossgar and Priory College, Holywood. The students worked with artist Rachel Glynne to produce very colourful felted hangings and three dimensional pieces.

The work was exhibited in Ard's Art Centre where Rachel provided additional workshops for students from local schools.
