EXTENDED SCHOOLS PROGRAMME

INTRODUCTION

What is an Extended School?

An Extended School provides a range of services and activities, often beyond the school day, to help meet the needs of children, their families and the wider community. Extended schools will engage in collaboration and

partnership with neighbouring schools and statutory, voluntary and community sector organisations operating in the local community to provide these services.
Examples of extended services include:
  • Breakfast Clubs, After School Clubs, Breakfast & Homework clubs, sport , drama, arts
  • Delivery of specialist services on or near the school - Health & SS
  • Family support – parenting skills, ICT skills
  • Providing the wider community with access to facilities – ICT, sports, etc.

The Extended Schools Programme
The Department of Education has made available
£10 million of funding which will be allocated to schools to deliver extended services in 2009/10. 53 schools in the SEELB will participate in the programme during 2009/10 and will receive funding based on a number of factors including the number of pupils enrolled at the schools.
