The SEELB welcome the decision by the Minister of Education to allow a new replacement school, as a result of the amalgamation of Knockbreda and Newtownbreda High Schools, to be advanced in planning.  This shows a very positive commitment by the Minister to the new school.
This announcement will allow the SEELB to progress to the economic appraisal stage and as is standard practice this will include the consideration of the best site for the new build. The economic appraisal will be commissioned by the SEELB during July and August and consultation on the siting of the replacement school will take place from September to November 2014. This consultation will enable key stakeholders from both schools, the community and elected representatives to make cases for where they believe the site should be. Given the requirements of planning, procurement and the actual build, it is anticipated that the new build school will not be fully operational before 2020. In the interim period the amalgamated school will operate on one or both of the current school sites.

This summer from 1st – 8th July, 30 young people from Krakow, Poland will come together with 30 young people from South Eastern Education and Library Board youth groups. The young people (all aged between 14 and 17) will be staying together in Ardnabannon Outdoor Education Centre, Castlewellan and taking part in a series of joint activities to encourage the development of co-operation and inter-cultural understanding. The Northern Irish group will be made up of 10 young people from the Protestant/Unionist tradition (from Newtownards), 10 young people from the Catholic/Nationalist tradition (from the Lecale area of Down) and 10 young people from non-traditional backgrounds (from greater Lisburn) including young people whose families have moved here from Poland. It is hoped that our programme will send out a strong message of acceptance and accommodation of diversity at a time when violent intolerance seems to be an increasingly prevalent feature of our society. This programme has been funded through the European Union’s “Youth in Action” initiative with additional assistance from the CRED Enhancement scheme.
